FTP is an Internet (or more properly a TCP/IP) communications protocol to allow you to upload and download files from a machine connected to your local machine via the Internet. FTP is composed of two parts; an FTP client and an FTP server. The FTP client is the software you execute on your local machine to send or receive files e.g. your webcam program. The FTP server is software which executes on a server machine on which the files are to be saved or retrieved. Most (if not all) machines which provide Web serving capability also serve as FTP servers to allow you to upload your web pages. Web pages are usually composed of HTML source files and images (either JPEG or GIF format). What do I need to know to use FTP? To be able to FTP (send) files to your FTP server and Web server, your Internet Service Provider (ISP) should provide you with four pieces of information. These are: The name of the FTP server - The userid to login to the FTP server - The password to login to the FTP server and the directory in which to save files. FTP of webcam images can be executed manually, by time schedule or on movememnt or a combination of all three depending on the webcam software you are using. FTP does not provide streaming video, just time lapsed stills but may well be adequate for your uses and is ideal for surf cams etc. where you may not have a broadband link, just a phone in the surf shack as you could set up an FTP webcam to upload an image once every hour or so and people could check the weather and surf conditions and it will only cost a local call per hour to provide this service on your website.
